The New York Knicks claimed the NBA Cup, overcoming the San Antonio Spurs with a notable performance in the final quarter. Trailing up to the third, the Knicks blasted off the fourth with an 8-0 run and managed to secure the lead. Jalen Brunson, who was named the NBA Cup MVP, and OG Anunoby, had standout contributions with 25 and 28 points respectively, the New York Post reports.
The Knicks' bench, featuring Jordan Clarkson, Mitchell Robinson, and Tyler Kolek, played key roles. Clarkson added 15 points, Robinson dominated with 15 rebounds, and Kolek contributed 14 points along with five assists and rebounds. Coach Mike Brown's gamble to stick with what he believed was a winning combination paid off as his team stifled the Spurs' threat, outscoring them by 16 points in the last quarter. "OG Anunoby, Tyler Kolek, Jordan Clarkson, Mitchell Robinson, they played their ass off tonight," Brunson told the New York Post.
Yet, in a rather surprising turn of events, the Knicks have decided not to raise a banner at Madison Square Garden to commemorate their NBA Cup victory, according to USA Today. This decision diverges from the practice adopted by previous NBA Cup winners and comes unexpected, especially considering coach Mike Brown's postgame enthusiasm about bringing a banner to "the most iconic arena in the league."
Responses from Knicks players varied, illustrating an ambivalence about the symbolism of the banner. Karl-Anthony Towns displayed pride in the victory, saying, "The Cup is special … we going to hold this Cup championship dear to our heart," whilst Josh Hart expressed indifference, opting to leave the decision to others. Jalen Brunson highlighted the Knicks' focus was swiftly shifting back to the regular season: "This is great and now we’re going to enjoy this, but once we leave tomorrow, we’re moving on." New York's next match-up is against the Philadelphia 76ers, coming fresh off their Cup high, as per USA Today.
