A Tuesday night drive through Kalihi turned serious when a car struck a 68-year-old woman at the intersection of North King and Factory streets, sending her to the hospital with multiple injuries. Honolulu Emergency Medical Services treated her at the scene, then transported her to a nearby hospital in serious condition after the 8:18 p.m. collision.
According to KITV, paramedics evaluated the woman at the scene before taking her to the hospital. The station reported that the crash happened at about 8:18 p.m. at North King and Factory streets, and noted it was not immediately clear whether speed, alcohol or drugs played any role in the collision.
North King Corridor Has Long Safety Concerns
The crash happened along North King Street, a busy stretch that residents and community advocates have been complaining about for years. As Civil Beat has reported, the city has floated a Complete Streets repaving project for North King that would add buffered lanes and improve crosswalks at intersections such as Factory Street. Advocates have pointed to cracked pavement and limited sidewalks as reasons why getting around on foot or by bike in Kalihi can feel more like a contact sport than a commute.
Investigation Limited So Far
Police had released few details as of the latest reports, and investigators had not said whether the driver might face any citations. KITV reported that officials had not yet identified the driver publicly or indicated whether any surveillance footage or witnesses had come forward to clarify what happened. The Honolulu Police Department Traffic Division is expected to review the scene to determine what comes next.
How To Report Tips
Anyone who saw the collision or has video that might help the investigation is asked to contact the Honolulu Police Department Traffic Division at (808) 723-3413. The department posts traffic-media updates online and continues to accept tips as the case moves forward.
