Maimonides Health is planning a partnership with NYC Health + Hospitals, city officials said. The merger is expected to be completed by April 2026 and will integrate Maimonides, which has faced financial challenges, into the city’s public healthcare system. Mayor Eric Adams highlighted that the merger will combine the two healthcare systems to maintain access to care for Brooklyn residents and other New Yorkers.

The integration of Maimonides into the city’s healthcare system is projected to generate additional revenue through increased Medicaid reimbursements, which are specific to public hospitals. This is particularly relevant as more than 80% of Maimonides’ patients are covered by Medicare and Medicaid, and the medical center has experienced financial difficulties, reporting a loss of $15 billion in the first three quarters, according to Brooklyn Paper. Maimonides CEO Ken Gibbs stated that joining NYC Health + Hospitals will allow the medical center to continue providing specialty care to the communities it has served.

The merger is supported by a $2.2 billion state grant aimed at strengthening Brooklyn’s healthcare system. Dr. Mitchell Katz, President and CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals, stated that Maimonides will maintain its distinct identity and community focus within the larger system. This approach corresponds with Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s decision to renominate Katz for his current role at NYC Health + Hospitals, as reported by CBS News.

The merger has faced legal challenges from members of Maimonides’ Board of Trustees, who sought to block the vote over concerns about potential impacts on care quality and the motivations behind the process. The trustees also questioned aspects of the Health + Hospitals deal — reported to be valued at $15 billion — including whether Maimonides’ doctors would be recognized as hospital employees. These concerns were later rejected by city attorneys and NYC Health + Hospitals in court filings.

Officials overseeing the merger have stated that patient care will continue without disruption. Maimonides patients will retain access to their health records through the Epic electronic health platform, which supports coordination with healthcare providers. City officials, including Mayor Adams, have emphasized that the merger is intended to maintain consistent access to healthcare for New Yorkers.
