The landscape of education in Orange County is facing a seismic shift as Orange County Public Schools (OCPS) grapples with a dramatic decrease in student enrollment. According to ClickOrlando, a consolidation plan on the table could result in the closure of seven schools, including Union Park Middle School and several elementary schools; among them are Bonneville, Chickasaw, Eccleston, Meadow Woods, McCoy, and Orlo Vista.
This comes amid an estimation of a $41 million funding deficit for OCPS. The district, which saw a decrease of 8,300 students or 4.4% of the student body over the past three years, is facing tough choices as enrollment trends shifted "dramatically" since the pandemic. The school board is set for a critical work session next week to discuss these potential closures, and the decision would affect not only students but teachers and staff employed at these institutions. Citing the same issue, WFTV reports a collective effort from the community at McCoy Elementary, rallying more than a thousand signatures on a Change.org petition to prevent the closure.
Each of the schools under consideration has experienced a startling drop in the number of students: Bonneville's student body decreased by nearly 230 since 2015, while Eccleston's plummeted by 328, nearly cutting its enrollment in half. The data paints a picture of underutilized spaces, exemplified by McCoy Elementary's enrollment falling well below its 834-student capacity, resting at just around 460 last year.
The planned closure of schools is a maneuver to safeguard the quality of education by preventing the dilution of resources. "Every child deserves a high-quality education and we can no longer afford to dilute resources," Board member Angie Gallo said, as per the WFTV report. Board member Alicia Farrant emphasized that the potential consolidation is not just a matter of closures, but of the profound impact on communities, a perspective echoed by School Board Chair Teresa Jacobs, who, with a weighted heart, expressed reluctance but a sense of fiscal inevitability: "We don't want to close schools, we don't want to consolidate schools," she stated. The final decision will likely come at the end of the school year, with students reassigned for the next academic calendar, should the board decide to proceed with the closures.
