Art aficionados and casual enthusiasts alike, mark your calendars for December 18. The Orlando Museum of Art (OMA) is opening its doors to the public for free as part of its "Access for All" program, which, aside from a November hiatus for The Festival of Trees, offers monthly free admission days to foster community involvement. According to CitySurfing Orlando, the day promises a range of activities, including screenings and lectures aimed at giving visitors a deeper dive into the art world.
In a move worth the buzz, noted artist Dawoud Bey will grace the OMA with his presence. Known for his thought-provoking three-channel video installation "Evergreen," Bey will offer insights during a conversation-style lecture with OMA chief curator Coralie Claeysen-Gleyzon. Their talk will delve into the intersection of landscape and history, stimulated by Bey's work filmed at Evergreen Plantation in Wallace, Louisiana. As stated by Bungalower, Bey's lecture will be among the day's highlights.
Dawoud Bey's presence isn't the day's only draw. Visitors can engage in a lunchtime talk focused on Southern landscapes or join a docent-led tour that sheds light on the museum's most notable pieces. Budding and seasoned artists will find solace and inspiration in gallery sketching sessions designed for all ages, ensuring a creative outlet for everyone. As part of the planned activities, the evening will house a special screening of Luis Bunue's "Un Chien Andalou" in collaboration with Enzian, set to the live score by Tinnitus Rex, providing a sensational pairing of visual and auditory art forms.
Current exhibitions, as highlighted by a report from CitySurfing Orlando, round out the museum's offerings. These include the "To Catch a Dream: Florida Watercolor Society 54th Annual Exhibition" and "Relationships: A Love for Collecting II." The latter is the continuation of a significant 314-work donation by Dr. James Cottrell and Joseph Lovett, contributing to the museum's permanent collection's scope and diversity. OMA promises a day saturated with culture and education, available to all, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. For additional details, OMA invites interested parties to visit their website at OMArt.org.
