A Philadelphia man has received a prison sentence exceeding 12 years for his involvement in the armed carjacking of a FedEx truck last year. Saikeen Dixon, 33, will also undergo three years of supervised release after his incarceration. His co-defendant, Ronald Byrd, 37, faces a similar fate with charges stemming from the same incident. According to details from a U.S. Attorney's Office release, the incident unfolded in August 2022, when an armed carjacking took place after a series of persistent requests for a specific package by a former FedEx employee.

The chain of events began on August 9, 2022, with a package sent from a California-based consulting firm to an address at Temple Hospital in Philadelphia. The next day, as the FedEx driver, identified only as J.H., was set to deliver the package, he received numerous requests from a former colleague, P.A., to hand over the parcel. After refusing an offer of $5,000, J.H. communicated with his supervisors who decided to shift the delivery to their own van. During the transit, Dixon and Byrd executed a planned carjacking, with Byrd brandishing a firearm, as J.H. made a narrow escape into oncoming traffic.

The truck was soon abandoned and law enforcement, after a K9 alert, found approximately nine kilograms of cocaine hidden in a package on board, with a street worth of about half a million dollars. "The brazen acts in this case posed a direct threat to the safety, security, and quality of life to Philadelphia residents," said FBI Philadelphia Special Agent in Charge Wayne A. Jacobs, as noted by the U.S. Attorney's Office. The case was a combined effort by multiple agencies including the Philadelphia Police Department and the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General's Bureau of Narcotics Investigation, ultimately leading to the convictions of Dixon and Byrd by June of this year.

Dixon and his accomplice were apprehended and charged by superseding indictment in September 2023. Their convictions for carjacking and firearms offenses came after a rigorous trial. “We remain steadfast in our collective mission of combating violent crime and keeping our communities safe,” Jacobs added, as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office. The sentencing code delivered by the United States District Judge Gail A. Weilheimer reflects a rigorous judicial response to the gang violence that impacts the streets and the lives of those within the community of Philadelphia.
