Last Sunday morning, Pierce County Sheriff's deputies engaged in a high-speed chase following a suspect in a stolen SUV. According to a social media post by the Pierce County Sheriff's Office, the pursuit commenced when the vehicle was spotted on Pacific Ave South. The deputies attempted to stop the vehicle, which then led them on a chase, including a reckless attempt to evade through a drive-thru before racing down Pacific Ave at unsafe speeds.
The erratic driving continued as the suspect appeared to be impaired, unpredictably braking and accelerating. Eventually, their failure to manage a turn led to a collision with a parked car and a tree at the 8000 block of S. Park Ave. The suspect fled the wrecked vehicle on foot but was located on a back balcony in someone's backyard with the aid of Tacoma Police Department's K9 Buck. Despite the man's assertions that he was wrongly accused, "body cam and dash cam don't lie," as reported by the sheriff's office.
The 36-year-old male was subsequently arrested and faces charges for possession of stolen property, resisting arrest, hit and run, eluding, and trespassing. His efforts to disguise his involvement did not stand against the law enforcement's evidence. The Pierce County Jail became his subsequent reservation post-capture.
In a related incident, Pierce County deputies encountered a reckless driver last Friday, around 2:45 am. The driver of a Mustang was performing donuts, obstructing the 224th St. E and Orting Kapowsin Hwy E intersection. When deputies intervened, the driver promptly complied and was arrested for gross misdemeanor of reckless driving. Despite the initial disruptive behavior, the suspect's choice to stop for the deputy spared him more severe felony charges and potential damage to his vehicle.
