A pre-dawn road-rage clash on San Antonio’s Near Northeast Side ended with two wrecked vehicles, reports of gunfire and a man detained, police said. The confrontation unfolded before sunrise Saturday in the 1500 block of North New Braunfels Avenue, as reported by News4SanAntonio.
Crash and early reports
Officers were dispatched around 5:15 a.m. to the 1500 block of North New Braunfels Avenue, where they found a black BMW and a gray Ford F-150, according to News4SanAntonio. The BMW’s 18-year-old driver told police that a 23-year-old man in the F-150 was road-raging and intentionally tried to crash into him, clipping the BMW and causing it to wreck.
Witnesses say suspect carried a long gun
Witnesses at the scene reported seeing the man get out of the gray pickup and run in the same direction as the BMW driver while holding what appeared to be a long gun, KSAT reported. The BMW driver also told officers he heard what sounded like gunshots before he ran from the area.
Detention and vehicle details
San Antonio police detained a suspect at or near the location and found him carrying a weapon light, but no firearm was recovered from him at that time, according to News4SanAntonio. Investigators later learned the gray F-150 had been reported stolen, and officers discovered bullet holes in the BMW while processing the scene.
A pattern of dangerous disputes
San Antonio has seen multiple road-rage encounters turn into shootings in recent months, including a deadly North Side incident in November, a trend that shows how quickly traffic beefs can spiral into violence, according to the San Antonio Express-News. Those cases have also underscored how challenging it can be for detectives to reconstruct what happened using eyewitness accounts and surveillance footage.
The San Antonio Police Department said the incident remains under investigation and did not immediately release the detained man’s name, according to KSAT. Additional details were not immediately available as detectives continued working the scene.
