A pre-dawn crash on Tropicana Avenue left a pedestrian fighting for life Friday, clogging the southwest Las Vegas commute while traffic investigators combed the scene.
What police told reporters
Metro officers said an SUV heading east on Tropicana struck a pedestrian who was in a travel lane and outside a marked crosswalk. The driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators, according to KSNV. The victim was rushed to a local hospital with injuries described as life threatening.
Corroboration and preliminary findings
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported the collision was called in at about 5:27 a.m. on Tropicana Avenue near Arville Street, just east of Decatur Boulevard. The outlet quoted Metro Lt. Marcin Zemsta as saying investigators do not believe speed or impairment were factors in the crash. Zemsta also said the SUV driver waited for officers as Tropicana remained closed in the area while detectives processed the scene.
Safety context on Tropicana
Even with major reconstruction work intended to make the corridor safer, Tropicana continues to see vehicle versus pedestrian crashes. The Nevada Department of Transportation notes that the I-15/Tropicana design-build project included wider sidewalks and a dedicated pedestrian walkway, features aimed at improving safety for people on foot along the busy corridor, per NDOT.
Investigation and traffic impacts
The stretch of Tropicana around the crash site stayed closed while Metro's Collision Investigation Section documented evidence and reconstructed what happened, with lanes reopening only after detectives cleared the scene, KSNV reports. Authorities have not released the pedestrian's name or any additional identifying details, only saying the injuries remain life threatening.
Witnesses or anyone with information is asked to contact the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's Collision Investigation Section or Crime Stoppers. Metro press releases routinely list phone numbers and online options for submitting anonymous tips, per LVMPD. This story will be updated as investigators release more information.
