In its forecast, the NWS Raleigh warns of strong winds with gusts potentially reaching 53 mph this morning, which include a line of severe thunderstorms expected to sweep through the region.
Earlier today, winds had already begun to show their strength, prompting the NWS to issue advisories for isolated gusts near 45 mph across the northwest Piedmont — making it crucial for locals to stay vigilant and secure any loose outdoor items, "Winds will strengthen gust between 30 and 40 mph today," the bulletin from the National Weather Service Raleigh read, laying out the risky conditions that may lead to dangerous situations, such as damaged property or compromised travel, particularly for high-profile vehicles on open roads. The showers are likely to subside by 9 a.m., with cloudy conditions expected to clear gradually by mid-morning.
A Severe Thunderstorm Warning is now in effect until 8:00 AM EST for several counties, including Wake, Vance, and Nash, where the National Weather Service is tracking a line of severe storms capable of producing 60 mph wind gusts and consequent damage. Expect damage to roofs, siding, and trees, warned the National Weather Service, indicating that the threat extends to various infrastructures and journeying across major highways in the affected areas, like Interstate 95 and Interstate 40, could become particularly perilous.
On Saturday through Christmas Day, expect sunny skies and mild temperatures with highs ranging from the low 50s to mid-60s. Nights are predicted to be mostly clear with lows dipping near freezing. The National Weather Service, in its Hazardous Weather Outlook, assures "Hazardous weather is not expected at this time."
