Raleigh's Parks and Recreation department is offering a way to keep active after dark, as the sun dips early beneath the horizon this winter. The Greenway After Dark Series invites those 16 and older to walk or run along different sections of the greenway, providing the community with the opportunity to meet fitness goals and enjoy the outdoors despite shorter days. According to the official announcement, "this drop-in program is set up for people to get outside, enjoy the greenway, and meet your fitness goals this winter."
Participants can begin at designated meeting points and travel up to three miles on the greenway at their own pace. The after-dark walks and runs will take place on select Tuesdays from December through February and are open to strollers and pets. Parks staff will be on site to provide general guidance and support.
The series will rotate locations, starting at the Kiwanis Neighborhood Center on Dec. 30, Jan. 27, and Feb. 24. Events will also be held at River Bend Park on Jan. 6 and Feb. 3, Glen Eden Pilot Park on Jan. 13 and Feb. 10, and Walnut Creek Wetland Park on Jan. 20 and Feb. 17. Each session is scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m, as noted on the city's official website.
The city is offering guided evening walks and runs on Raleigh’s greenways during the winter months. Participants are encouraged to register through RecLink so staff can estimate attendance, though walk-ins are also allowed, according to parks officials.
