The National Weather Service in Raleigh is keeping a Winter Weather Advisory in effect until noon EST today for portions of central North Carolina, including Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and Raleigh. Temperatures in the 20s may result in icy spots on roads, bridges, and overpasses.
The advisory states that morning temperatures in the 20s may cause moisture or snow on roads, bridges, and overpasses to freeze, creating hazardous travel conditions through the late morning. The NWS instructs drivers to slow down and use caution, especially on bridges and overpasses, which tend to freeze first. Temperatures are expected to rise above freezing by late morning, and increasing solar radiation is anticipated to reduce the likelihood of slippery surfaces. Until then, commuters are advised to proceed with care.
In the days following the Winter Weather Advisory, the forecast indicates no expected hazardous weather. Temperatures are projected to range from lows in the upper 20s to highs in the mid-50s, with a mix of partly cloudy and sunny conditions.
The NWS message also includes guidance for pedestrians, advising them to be prepared for slippery roads, slow down and use caution while driving, and watch their first few steps on stairs, sidewalks, and driveways. These surfaces may be icy, increasing the risk of falls and injuries.
