A UC Davis Health nurse who cared for patients at the Sacramento VA Medical Center was killed over the weekend after being struck by a car while walking to work in Rancho Cordova. She was rushed to the VA emergency room and later transferred to UC Davis Medical Center due to severe injuries. She died, leaving behind a husband and two young sons.
What officials say
The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said the collision occurred near the emergency-room entrance when a driver pulled into the parking lot and struck the pedestrian, causing her to hit her head, Sgt. Amar Gandhi told reporters. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. The victim was identified as Novyrose Mejia, according to KCRA.
Hospital statements
UC Davis Health told KCRA it "grieves the loss of Novyrose Mejia, a cherished nurse," remembering her as hardworking and compassionate. The VA also extended condolences to her family. Officials have not released further medical details as the collision remains under investigation.
Family fundraiser
The family has launched a fundraiser on GoFundMe, organized by Vernon Mejia, to help cover medical and funeral costs. According to the KCRA, the campaign describes Mejia as a woman "rooted in faith, compassion and service" and notes she leaves behind a husband and two sons. Organizers are asking for prayers and privacy while the family makes arrangements.
Why pedestrian safety matters
Deadly encounters between cars and people on foot remain a stubborn public-safety problem. Drivers are projected to have struck and killed 7,148 pedestrians in the United States in 2024, according to the GHSA. California officials have responded with record spending on enforcement and road-safety upgrades, as outlined by the Governor's office.
Rancho Cordova police and the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office are still investigating the crash, and no criminal charges have been announced. As coworkers mourn a nurse they describe as deeply dedicated to her patients, Mejia's family continues to request privacy while they navigate their loss.
