What started as a late-morning traffic stop on the Northwest Side ended in a creek, a scuffle and a gun and drug seizure, after San Antonio police say a driver tried to bolt instead of pulling over.
SAPD officers attempted to stop the man around 11:36 a.m. today in the 6900 block of Northwest Loop 410, but he took off, according to local reporting. Police say he had been talking on his phone while driving and later told officers he "got scared" because he was on probation. A search of the vehicle turned up a stolen handgun and suspected controlled substances, as reported by KENS5.
Officers say the driver struggled with them during the encounter and ended up in a nearby creek before they were able to get him into custody. He suffered a small cut above one eye and now faces new charges tied to the pursuit and the items found in his car.
Charges, Probation and What Comes Next
Authorities told reporters the man faces additional felony counts related to possession of a stolen firearm and controlled substances, with final charges pending from the Bexar County District Attorney's Office. Under Texas law, a fresh arrest or new felony allegations can trigger a move to revoke community supervision, and a judge may modify or revoke probation after a revocation hearing, according to Justia.
Why Stolen Guns Matter in San Antonio
Federal prosecutors have been trying to crack down on crews that steal guns from vehicles and feed them into the illegal market, since those weapons often resurface in violent crimes. The U.S. Attorney's Office in the Western District of Texas has brought cases targeting those networks, which helps explain why a traffic stop that turns up a stolen gun and drugs becomes a high-priority case, per the Justice Department.
SAPD had not released the suspect's name by early afternoon, and booking records are expected to reflect the formal charges once the District Attorney's Office files them. The department says the investigation remains active and is asking anyone with information to call SAPD's non-emergency line.
