A chimney fire in the wee hours of Monday morning led to significant damage to a Northwest Side home, though the residents were fortunate to quickly escape unharmed. The San Antonio Fire Department reported that the blaze began shortly before 2 a.m. in the 7100 block of Malvern near Tezel Road. The fire, which originated in the chimney, swiftly spread to the attic, posing a serious threat to the structure.
Firefighters faced certain challenges due to the house's design, which KSAT notes made it more difficult to quickly extinguish the growing flames. Despite these difficulties, the fire department managed to stop the fire, although not before it inflicted damage on about 40% of the house.
Thankfully, according to officials, there were no reported injuries from the incident. The safety of the five residents was ensured as they were able to leave the house safely amidst the rising flames. Relieved to have emerged from such a peril unscathed, the family now faces the daunting task of recovery and repair in the aftermath of the fire.
While the investigation into the exact cause of the fire is ongoing, incidents like this serve as a stark reminder of the potential dangers that can arise from heating appliances during colder seasons. Fox San Antonio underscores the importance of regular maintenance and inspections of chimneys and fireplaces to prevent such hazards. As families seek to warmly nestle in their homes against the chill, ensuring these precautions are in place may just be the measure that can wholly stop a disaster in its tracks.
