In a baffling incident on San Antonio's north side, a 76-year-old man has been taken into custody for posing as a border patrol agent and threatening passing motorists. According to KENS 5, the man was reported to have accosted drivers with a firearm and demanded their documentation.
Police responded to multiple calls about an individual threatening drivers on the 1200 block of West French Place at approximately 2:26 p.m on Wednesday. The San Antonio Police Department officers who arrived at the scene found, and detained the man as he was returning to his residence. The suspect, identified as Oswaldo Ponce, was found with a gun, a badge, and wearing a hat that suggested affiliation with the Border Patrol. Notably, SAPD mentioned in a preliminary report shared with KSAT that Ponce* "appeared to be having a mental health crisis."
The incident escalated when Ponce allegedly approached unsuspecting motorists, pointed a gun at them, and demanded to see their "papers," as mentioned on KENS5. The charges leveled against Ponce include aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, deadly conduct, and impersonating a public servant. There has been no mugshot available at the time of reporting, but it is expected to be released and added to the coverage as the investigation proceeds.
