The Santa Rosa Police Department apprehended a man after a high-speed chase that started at a DUI checkpoint and ended with a crash and a notable drug bust. The whole operation unfolded yesterday around 8 PM, when officers at the DUI checkpoint signaled 44-year-old Ruben Soto to pull over for secondary screening.
The suspect, in his flight from the checkpoint, weaved through the city streets and tore onto eastbound Highway 12 and then took to southbound Highway 101; pushing speeds between 65 to 90 mph, this chase drew to an abrupt halt when Soto attempted to exit the freeway at Petaluma Boulevard North, where he collided with a center divider, the collision effectively immobilizing his vehicle. After refusing to comply with the officers' commands to exit his crashed vehicle for about five minutes, Soto was eventually detained without further incident, according to a social media post from the Santa Rosa Police.
On searching Soto's vehicle, the police discovered a considerable stash of narcotics, including 0.5 pounds of what they suspect to be methamphetamine, 111 grams of heroin, and 17.7 grams of fentanyl, substances often linked with sales and transportation; the incident further deepened in gravity when officers confirmed Soto was under the influence while driving. After a medical evaluation at a local hospital, he was booked into Sonoma County Jail, facing multiple charges that include driving under the influence of drugs, felony evading a peace officer, and various other drug-related offenses.
The charges against Soto indicate a severe breach of public safety norms, capturing not just the risks of impaired driving but also the implications of narcotics distribution: 23152(f) VC for Driving Under the Influence of Drugs; 2800.2(a) VC for Felony Evading a Peace Officer; 11378 H&S for Possession of a Controlled Substance for Sale; 11379(a) H&S for Transportation of a Controlled Substance; 11351 H&S for Possession/Purchase of a Controlled Substance for Sale; and 11352 H&S for Transportation or Sale of a Controlled Substance and lastly, 148(a)(1) PC for Obstructing or Delaying a Peace Officer are among the charges Soto now faces following the incident.
