A recent DUI incident in Seattle's Magnolia neighborhood resulted in the arrest of a 25-year-old man after his vehicle collided with two parked cars late Saturday night. The Seattle Police Department (SPD) reports that at approximately 11:40 p.m. on December 6, officers encountered a Nissan Rogue flipped on its side against a power pole on the 3400 block of West Viewmont Way West. The driver, found to be "heavily intoxicated" according to the SPD, had crashed into a Nissan Leaf and a BMW sedan.

Seattle Fire Department personnel were required to extricate the man from his vehicle, after which he was transported to Harborview Medical Center with injuries described as non-life-threatening. Since his release from the hospital he faces charges of DUI and Reckless Driving, in addition to citations for Speed Too Fast for Road/Conditions, and possessing an Open Alcohol Container in a moving vehicle, as reported by the SPD Blotter. The crash not only affected the vehicles involved, but also nearly severed a power pole, prompting a significant road closure in the area.

December marks a heightened effort by the SPD to crack down on intoxicated driving. This year saw the reinstatement of the December DUI Emphasis team, dedicated to the issue for the first time since 2019, actively patrolling the city nightly from 6 p.m. to 4 a.m. The SPD reports that from December 3-7, these teams have engaged in 175 police contacts resulting in 27 DUI arrests, and have issued 123 citations, most of them for speeding infractions.

Investigation of the Magnolia DUI collision is ongoing, under the purview of SPD's Traffic Collision Investigation Squad. The rise in DUI-related incidents and police activity is a stark reminder of the dangers of drunk driving, particularly as the holiday season approaches. The emphasis teams will continue their watch, aiming to curb these occurrences and ensure greater safety on Seattle's roads.
