On Christmas Day, a routine response to a pedestrian hazard escalated into an audacious theft of a Washington State Patrol (WSP) vehicle, prompting a high-speed pursuit on I-5. At approximately 11:45 a.m., near the Northgate area of Seattle, a WSP lieutenant approached an individual who was reportedly running across the freeway. According to KOMO News, the person responded by pushing the officer to the ground before commandeering her patrol car.
As the suspect fled the scene, captured on video, Jake Teschner witnessed the individual standing amidst traffic on the interstate. A separate video obtained by KING 5 shows the suspect forcibly dragging the trooper out of the vehicle before making their escape. This multi-agency pursuit concluded with the WSP executing a precision immobilization technique, commonly known as a PIT maneuver, on southbound I-5 in Lynnwood, bringing the chase to an end.
The Seattle Police Department (SPD) was among the agencies involved, acting in support of their counterparts in the Washington State Patrol following the car theft. Officials from SPD confirmed their participation in the incident, highlighting the cooperative nature of law enforcement in the region. Interstate traffic was temporarily disrupted due to the closure of the left and HOV lanes during the apprehension, though these lanes were later reopened to the public.
No injuries were reported as a result of the incident. "No one was injured," WSP Trooper Rick Johnson informed My Edmonds News after the suspect was taken into custody. The identity of the detained individual has not been released.
