The Seattle Police Department is stepping up efforts against impaired driving throughout December, with officers conducting nightly patrols from 6 p.m. to 4 a.m. across the city's busy streets and nightlife areas. This marks the first deployment of a dedicated DUI emphasis team since 2019, aimed at reducing incidents of drunk driving during the holiday season, according to the Seattle Police Department.
Traffic Section Capt. Randy Ward emphasized the department’s focus on safety, stating, "It is a top priority for the Seattle Police Department and the Traffic Section to identify and safely detain impaired drivers who put our communities at risk by operating motor vehicles on our roadways." The initiative reflects the department’s commitment to protecting the community and preventing injuries or deaths caused by impaired driving, as reported by the Seattle Police Department.
The Seattle Police Department is working with the Washington State Patrol, Kent Police, and other King County agencies for a coordinated effort on December 19 called the "Night of 1000 Stars," part of the "Vision Zero" and "Target Zero" campaigns to reduce traffic fatalities. Sgt. Tom Heller reminded drivers that a BAC of 0.08% or higher is illegal and said, “We hope our community makes safe driving choices this holiday season. Make a plan, use rideshare or a taxi, or use a designated driver,” adding, “Pro tip: the designated driver needs to be actually sober, not just the least intoxicated person in the car!"
