In a significant boost for Florida's military infrastructure, Senator Ashley Moody played a pivotal role in securing substantial funding through the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), as announced on her official website. The authorization brings more than $851 million to the state's installations, and among other provisions, seeks to enhance the quality of life for servicemembers.
The Senator described the NDAA's passage as "a victory for the strengthening of our national security and Florida’s military bases." While her statement reflected on the loss of two National Guardsmen and an interpreter due to an apparent ISIS attack in Syria, expressing condolences, she emphasized the necessity of robust defenses as critical for maintaining national safety. Tragically, they were killed far too soon, Moody lamented, illustrating the dangers faced by military personnel.
Florida, having 21 military bases and housing three combatant commands, including SOUTHCOM, CENTCOM, and SOCOM, stands to gain considerably from the allocated funds. Senator Moody, whose past role as Florida's Attorney General involved overseeing the Military and Veterans Assistance Program, has evidently continued her commitment to supporting servicemembers and their families.
The NDAA earmarks funds for various Florida bases, such as $219.3 million for Eglin Air Force Base and $457 million for Naval Air Station Key West. Moody, fighting to secure this funding, ensured that Florida’s military presence remains adequately supported. The press release details the specific allocations, which include notable projects like the Phillips Parkway Haul Route at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station costing $28.0 million and the $33 million SF Climate Controlled Tactical Warehouse Storage at Homestead Air Reserve Base, crucial for operational efficiency.
With over 90,000 active and reserve armed forces members living in Florida alongside 1.5 million veterans, the funds are expected to positively impact the military community broadly. The Senator remains a staunch advocate, previously recognized for her efforts to aid servicemembers, veterans, and their families against scams or fraud as the state Attorney General before taking office in the Senate. Her ongoing commitment to Florida's servicemembers and military readiness seems unwavering in the face of evolving global threats.
