Derrick Jones of Silver Spring was shot on June 19 and died on September 28 from his injuries, which have now been ruled a homicide. The shooter, 20-year-old Julian Rogers, the son of Jones’ girlfriend, was arrested at the scene, where a 9mm firearm with an extended magazine was recovered, according to the Montgomery County Police Department.
Rogers was initially charged with attempted second-degree murder, but Jones’ death has prompted the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office to consider upgrading the charges to first-degree murder. A live round was found in the weapon’s chamber, indicating it was ready to fire at the time of the shooting, as reported by the Montgomery County Police Department.
Jones died in a rehabilitation facility from injuries he sustained in a shooting. An autopsy on September 29 confirmed his death was caused by the shooting. Following this, the State's Attorney’s Office is reviewing the case and may pursue a first-degree murder charge against Rogers, as the original charges were based on Jones being alive, as stated by the Montgomery County Police Department.
