An evening drive on the South Loop East has turned into a deadly hit-and-run investigation, after Houston police say a 43-year-old man struck on the freeway last Wednesday died from his injuries over the weekend. The collision sent the victim to a local hospital and set off an HPD search for a silver vehicle that took off instead of stopping.
According to the City of Houston Newsroom, the crash happened around 6:40 p.m. last Wednesday at 7600 South Loop East (South Interstate Highway 610). Police say a vehicle traveling westbound struck a pedestrian who was in a moving lane of traffic. Houston Fire Department paramedics rushed the man to an area hospital, where he died on Saturday. The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences is handling family notification.
HPD's Vehicular Crimes Division, in a statement attributed to Sergeant J. James and Officer T. Pham, described the striking vehicle as silver and said the driver left without stopping to provide aid, according to a statement the Hoodline reviewed from the department. The release notes that the victim's identity is pending notification of next of kin.
Investigators seek the driver and vehicle
Detectives say they are looking for a silver vehicle of unknown make or model that was headed westbound before fleeing the scene after striking the pedestrian. Anyone who saw the crash or has information about a matching vehicle is urged to contact the HPD Hit-and-Run Unit at 713-247-4065 or speak anonymously with Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS, according to the department's release.
Pedestrian safety and local trends
The death adds to a grim pattern on Houston roads, where pedestrian safety has been a growing concern. The Houston Chronicle reported that 2024 was the deadliest year on city roadways, with at least 345 traffic deaths, including 119 pedestrians.
Local and county leaders have started rolling out targeted safety efforts in response. Harris County announced an initiative worth roughly $37 million, focused on high-risk corridors in the precincts, in an effort to curb serious crashes and fatalities, according to Axios.
Legal consequences for hit-and-run deaths
Under Texas law, leaving the scene of a crash that results in death without stopping and rendering aid is a felony offense under Transportation Code § 550.021. Penalties can include prison time and fines, as set out in recent legislative text. Prosecutors may also pursue additional charges if investigators uncover evidence of impairment or other criminal conduct related to the collision.
Anyone with information about the incident, the vehicle, or the driver is asked to contact HPD's Hit-and-Run Unit at 713-247-4065, call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS to remain anonymous, or reach the City of Houston media relations unit at 713-308-3280, according to the release. The investigation remains activ,e and detectives continue to follow leads.
