Street Beet, a mainstay on the Detroit vegan pop-up scene, is setting down roots with a brick-and-mortar location in Corktown, effectively replacing the now-shuttered Bobcat Bonnie's at 1800 Michigan Avenue. Known for its plant-based comfort food, Street Beet has garnered a substantial following over the years with offerings like tacos, burgers, and Southern classics all devoid of animal products. The much-anticipated launch of their permanent spot was reported by ClickOnDetroit and is scheduled for a 4 p.m. opening on Thursday, December 11.
Nina Paletta and Meghan Shaw, the creators behind the venture, have cultivated a fan base in Detroit since 2018, and the pair appears to have come full circle, returning to the Corktown neighborhood where they first began hosting pop-ups. Alongside the usual menu, Street Beet’s new locale will feature nonalcoholic drinks, house-made desserts, and foster a touch of nostalgia with an assortment of vintage arcade games installed by Offworld Arcade, as detailed by The Detroit News. The space isn't only about food, it's about creating an immersive dining experience that includes game-centric entertainment and an inclusive atmosphere.
The official opening includes a four-day weekend celebration and service that echoes the community and commitment Street Beet has shown since its inception. "We’ve dreamed of this space for years,” Shaw stated in an interview with The Detroit News, “Bringing Street Beet home to Corktown feels unreal — this is our biggest leap yet, and we can’t wait to feed everyone again.”
Plans for the new establishment also include a coffee counter featuring Coffee Haus products and an expanded brunch service that accommodates both weekends and weekdays, as reported by ClickOnDetroit. The restaurant's innovative approach to vegan dining offers a space where diners can indulge in guilt-free versions of fast-food favorites, a concept that has proven not only popular but also viable, enabling Shaw and Paletta to transition from pop-up events to a dedicated venue, according to a backstory provided by Deadline Detroit. With its doors opening soon, Street Beet is poised to continue challenging the stereotype of vegan cuisine being bland and uninspiring, offering a vibrant alternative to Detroit's food scene.
