An elderly man is fighting for his life after being struck by a compact SUV on Military Drive near Roosevelt Avenue on Monday night, a violent collision that witnesses say sent him flying nearly 20 yards down the roadway. Emergency crews rushed him to San Antonio Military Medical Center, where he remained in critical condition. Police temporarily blocked off part of the street while they worked the scene.
Details from first responders
According to News4SanAntonio, the man, believed to be in his late 70s or early 80s, stepped into the road at about 7 p.m. and was struck by a dark-colored, small compact SUV traveling eastbound. That report notes the force of the impact carried the victim from the area near an IBC Bank to a nearby Pika Pika sign, before paramedics transported him to San Antonio Military Medical Center.
Preliminary tests on the driver showed no signs of intoxication, and police say the driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with officers.
Police at the scene
The San Antonio Police Department told KSAT the crash occurred in the 900 block of Southeast Military Drive near a bank. SAPD’s traffic investigators shut down part of the roadway to document the scene and reconstruct how the collision happened. No charges have been announced.
Investigation and aerial images
SAPD deployed its Raven drone unit to take aerial images while detectives canvassed the area for witnesses, News4SanAntonio reports. Investigators are also collecting measurements, photos, and video to reconstruct the sequence of events and determine if further action is needed.
Recent collisions on the South Side
This crash is the latest in a series of serious pedestrian incidents on San Antonio’s South Side. Earlier this month, a woman was killed on Roosevelt Avenue, raising concerns about safety on the corridor. The incidents have prompted calls for safer crossings and stricter traffic enforcement.
How witnesses can help
Authorities ask anyone with dashcam or cellphone video, or who witnessed the crash, to contact SAPD’s traffic investigation detail. Police say more details will be released as the investigation continues.
