In an incident that the Nevada State Police are calling "dangerous, deadly, and downright dumb," an 18-year-old was arrested for a reckless high-speed chase reaching speeds up to 140 mph on U.S. 95 near Charleston Boulevard. The episode unfolded just after 12:30 a.m. Monday, as reported by FOX5 Vegas, when a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department helicopter, AIR5, detected the light-colored sedan cutting across lanes and using shoulders to illegally overtake other vehicles.
While AIR5 tracked the speeding car from above, the sedan sent sparks flying across the darkened freeway. The driver’s antics ended when a ground officer managed to intercept the vehicle on the southbound I-15 ramp from U.S. 95, officials noted signs of impairment from the young driver. In the car were three additional teens, their ages ranged from 16 to 17, including another 18-year-old, neither of whom was harmed during this hazardous escapade.
The newly released video from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department shows reckless driving on public roads, according to News3LV. The footage clearly captures the driver ignoring traffic laws and safety. The helicopter unit played a key role in helping officers on the ground track and stop the speeding driver. Police later emphasized that they are cracking down on dangerous driving through both aerial and ground operations. In 2025 alone, the area under LVMPD jurisdiction has seen 148 fatalities that are a direct result of such negligent actions on the roads.
