Two New York men, Jared Ramirez and Joshua Ramos, have been taken into custody in Berks County after a police pursuit that ended with a multivehicle crash in Reading. The arrest followed the recovery of roughly 500 pieces of stolen mail, including Christmas cards, which authorities plan to reissue to their rightful recipients. According to 6abc, the search of the suspects' vehicle also yielded washed checks, multiple bank cards that did not belong to them, and a coveted post office master key.

The duo's apprehension began when a Berks County resident reported suspicious activity around the St. Lawrence post office mail drop box to the Central Berks Regional Police. The caller's vigilance, noted in an account by the Reading Eagle, led to the police spotting and pursuing their black BMW. The chase culminated in an accident at 10th and Penn Streets, causing a chain-reaction crash.

Ramos, who was driving, attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended after falling on ice. Ramirez was discovered under the deployed airbags in the back seat of the smashed car. Both men face multiple felony counts, including theft of mail and identity theft. They were arraigned before District Judge Alvin B. Robinson, with Ramos's bail set at $100,000 and Ramirez released on $75,000 bail, as detailed by the Reading Eagle.

The investigation highlighted the significant rise in mail theft incidents, particularly check-washing scams that manipulate checks stolen from mailboxes. An entire savings account, containing over $100,000, was previously wiped out in one such incident, underscoring the impact on victims. Berks County District Attorney John Adams, in statements obtained by 69 News, confirmed the arrests of Ramirez and Ramos in connection with the mail thefts.

The recovery of the master key was especially significant, as it presumably could open any post office mailbox. Central Berks Police Chief Raymond Serafin credited an informed citizen’s timely report for the resolution and suggested that residents remain vigilant with their mail. Protective measures include avoiding leaving mail in mailboxes overnight and depositing outgoing mail at secure locations or directly at local post offices, as recommended by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and noted by the Reading Eagle.
