A Ventura County jury has found a man guilty of felony charges in connection with a hit-and-run accident that led to the death of two dogs and injuries to a driver. Leonardo Palafox, 37, faced the judgment on December 15, 2025, after a series of events that unfolded earlier in the year, on February 6, according to a release by the Ventura County District Attorney's Office.
The incident occurred when Palafox ran a steady red light in Ventura and nearly hit a pedestrian, only to fatally strike their two dogs. He then proceeded to collide head-on with a vehicle, causing injuries to another person. In an attempt to seemingly avoid responsibility, Palafox reversed his truck and chose to swiftly leave the scene. The abandoned vehicle was later found with removed license plates and evidence that included dog hair and damage consistent with the accident. The Ventura Police Department and Ventura County Crime Laboratory's investigation ultimately connected Palafox to the crime through forensic analysis.
In total, Palafox was convicted of three felony and three misdemeanor counts, which included leaving the scene of an accident, two counts of cruelty to animals, destroying or concealing evidence, and two counts of hit and run driving. Deputy District Attorney Patrick Benjamin led the prosecution of the case, securing a verdict that he hopes will offer some solace for the victims. "This case presented a terrible set of circumstances for the victims,” Mr. Benjamin said. "Thanks to the thorough investigation done by the Ventura Police Department and Ventura County Crime Laboratory, we were able to hold the defendant accountable for his actions. I hope the jury’s findings help the victims receive some closure to this tragedy."
Palafox is currently being held without bail and is scheduled to be sentenced on January 14, 2026. He faces a maximum sentence of four years and four months in state prison. This comes on the heels of a trial that has stirred conversation in the community about responsible driving and animal safety. As part of the legal proceedings, the abandoned truck registered to Palafox’s cousin, forensic evidence, and witness statements played a pivotal role in the jury's decision. As of now, the Ventura community awaits the final resolution of this case come January, with the expectation that the sentence imposed will reflect the seriousness of Palafox's actions.
