The Washington County Fair Park & Conference Center hosted the 35th Annual SkillComp, where construction apprentices competed in carpentry, electrical, HVAC, and plumbing. Organized by the Associated Builders and Contractors of Wisconsin (ABCWI), the event allows participants to demonstrate their skills and qualify for the National Craft Championships, scheduled for Salt Lake City in March.
SkillComp brought together apprentices, their mentors, and several elected officials, including County Executive Josh Schoemann and Congressmen Scott Fitzgerald and Glenn Grothman, who attended to observe the participants’ work. According to a social media post from Washington County, these officials, along with about a dozen others, toured the event, noting the presence of skilled trades and their potential impact on the local economy.
The event offers apprentices an opportunity to advance in their trades and demonstrates the ongoing need for skilled labor. As technology and automation continue to shape industries, skilled trades remain an essential part of the workforce. Winners of SkillComp, who will advance to the national competition, showcase both their individual abilities and the continued development of expertise in these fields.
