The City of West Allis Public Works department has been working in recent weeks to address challenges from changing weather. The team has focused on maintaining city infrastructure, including clearing ice from streets, responding to water main breaks, and ensuring the safety of public transportation areas. A recent city update provided residents with information on ongoing efforts to keep West Allis safe and accessible this winter.
The condition of the streets is a key concern for many residents. The Public Works crew is actively spreading abrasives to address ice accumulation. "They're spreading abrasives and other materials on ice-covered streets to improve traction and safety," the city said in a Facebook post, highlighting ongoing efforts to prevent weather-related accidents.
The fluctuating temperatures have also raised the risk of water main breaks, with the Water Division responding to several incidents in the past few days. The city advises residents to watch for potential traffic detours or delays while repairs are underway. Residents are reminded that winter conditions can be unpredictable and may cause additional disruptions.
Alongside these efforts, West Allis continues to manage routine city services, including leaf collection and maintaining safe access to bus stops. The official government update noted that staff are focusing on clearing 180 leaf piles in the western part of the city.
Forestry crews are treating bus stops, and snow removal is prioritized in areas such as dead-ends, cul-de-sacs, and city parking lots, where snow can accumulate and disrupt daily activities. The city has stated that accumulated snow in these areas will be addressed as soon as possible, ensuring that all parts of the city are included in the Public Works department's winter preparedness plan.
Residents have been thanked for their patience and cooperation during this period of increased activity.
