In a chilling act of violence that shook a West Philadelphia neighborhood, a mother and her infant daughter were shot just days before Christmas. A report by NBC Philadelphia detailed that police responded to a shooting on the 1500 block of North Robinson Street early yesterday morning.
Upon arrival at approximately 4:25 a.m., police discovered 43-year-old Alayiah Hill and her five-month-old daughter Yuri wounded, with the mother having sustained at least six or seven gunshot wounds and the baby shot once in the leg. Hill's sister and another child were in the house when the mother was crying out of surgery, officials said.
Purnell Tucker, a neighbor, expressed his disbelief and horror to NBC Philadelphia over the incident, stating, "It's sad. It's sad. That's really cowardly, to shoot a baby and her mother. Unbelievable." Similar sentiments were echoed by David Hicks, another neighbor, in an interview with FOX 29 News, where he commented on the unexpected violence in what he characterized as a "very quiet neighborhood."
"I just heard I heard a pop and that’s what made me hop up, so once I got into the room, there was blood everywhere," Amaryiah Mathis, Hill's sister, recounted the horrifying moments to NBC Philadelphia. Mathis confirmed both her sister and niece were expected to recover after the surgeries. Amidst the ongoing investigation, and with no suspect identified or arrests made, she speculated to NBC Philadelphia that the child's father could be the person responsible for the crime.
As of the latest updates, authorities are searching for a silver truck believed to be tied to the suspected gunman who fled the scene. While the motive remains unknown, the Philadelphia Police have been diligently conducting the investigation, as reported by CBS News Philadelphia. A plea for any information about the incident accompanies the grim reminder that violence, even against the most innocent, knows no holiday.
