Porch piracy in West University has hit a crescendo this holiday season, with police recently apprehending two women linked to a spate of package thefts. These arrests were a result of both innovative technology and tried-and-true detective work. The West University Police Department leveraged its virtual gate camera system, which includes license plate readers and live-feed cameras that monitor all community entry and exit points, as reported by Click2Houston.
The suspects, identified as Tania Lisbeth Medrano and Mariela Reyes, found themselves in police custody after their vehicle was traced to the Memorial Villages area and subsequently stopped by officers. A search of the vehicle unearthed pawn shop receipts for items reported stolen, bolstering the evidence against them. Reyes, who already had an active warrant, and Medrano, detained on an immigration violation, openly confessed to their crimes during questioning. "Through investigation and talking with both suspects, they openly admitted to committing these crimes in West U," said West University PD spokeswoman Katie Wilson, in a statement obtained by Click2Houston.
A more detailed insight into the case was provided by ABC13, which noted that the duo planned to continue their pilfering spree. The recovery of the stolen goods was aided by cooperation with the local pawn shops, bringing some measure of restitution to the affected residents who later confirmed on social media that they had their items returned. Both Medrano and Reyes have been charged with theft and are currently on an immigration hold.
With the holiday season's influx of deliveries, the West University Police emphasize the importance of not leaving packages unattended for extended periods. "If you're not going to be there we encourage you to contact family, friends, neighbors, to pick up those packages for you. And if you have cameras or lights at night it can help deter," Wilson advised the community, according to an ABC13 interview. This recent case underscores the increasing vigilance of law enforcement agencies and community members alike in preventing and addressing property theft.
