Milwaukee residents, as the city braces for a chilly start to December with a bout of snowfall and strikingly low temperatures. On the first day of the month, the overcast sky hovers above the city with the mercury dipping to 18°F, while the calm wind does little to mitigate the biting cold, according to the latest forecast from the National Weather Service.
Despite the tranquility of the breeze, a modest blanket of snow is forecasted to arrive later in the day, with the NWS anticipating an 80% chance of snow after 4 pm and a high of nearly 30 degrees; this might disrupt the evening commute as accumulations of less than a half-inch are expected, earlier this morning the city also encountered patchy and freezing fog which could repeat in the forthcoming days. The weather outlook for tonight promises more wintry conditions, as snow continues primarily before 9 pm, with temperatures expected to drop to around 14 degrees with a persistent southwest wind shifting northwest after midnight, setting the stage for a chilly conclusion to the day.
The brief respite will come on Tuesday, with the sun expected to make an appearance and a high temperature of around 25 degrees. The wind, remaining consistent at 5 to 10 mph, will shift from northwest to southwest in the afternoon. Looking ahead, the NWS forecast suggests a return to snowy conditions with a 20% chance of snow after midnight on Tuesday night and temperatures hovering around 18°F, with similar patterns of snow likelihood and cloud coverage throughout the week, including a 60% chance of snow on Wednesday and multiple days featuring chances of nighttime snowfall and mostly cloudy skies.
Apart from the immediate concern of light snowfall, there's another chance for light snow on Wednesday. The Hazardous Weather Outlook from the NWS emphasizes, particularly for areas south of I-94, where the precipitation seems inevitable, although no spotter activation is deemed necessary at this time. For Milwaukee and its neighboring counties, like Marquette and Green Lake, residents would do well to remain vigilant as the layers of cloud and whispering winds carry the season's frigid breath across the landscape, and though the snow might not be substantial enough to build an army of snowmen, it carries the weight of winter's arrival.
