The grip of winter weather has tightened across Southeast Michigan, bringing with it a blend of snow and ice that has disrupted the routine flow of life in the region. Seven counties—Livingston, Oakland, Macomb, Genesee, Lapeer, Sanilac, and St. Clair—are currently under a winter weather advisory due to accumulating snow, as per a report from ClickOnDetroit. The National Weather Service advises that additional snow accumulations could reach up to 2 inches, with temperatures expected to nosedive below freezing come Wednesday afternoon, icing over untreated surfaces with a treacherous clarity.
Yesterday's snowfall, which came down heavily over the region, is not showing signs of departure. According to The Detroit News, Wixom was blanketed with 5.4 inches over a 10-hour window, and other communities like Shelby Township and Farmington Hills received several inches by early morning. These conditions prompted multiple Metro Detroit schools to close for the day, given the risk posed by the expected ice and additional snowfall.
The onslaught of wintry conditions has made travel precarious across the area, with the Michigan Department of Transportation reporting numerous crashes on major interstates like I-696, I-75, I-96, and I-275. Road departments in Macomb, Oakland, and Wayne counties had dispatched snowplowing crews in anticipation of the weather. "Crews will be working throughout the duration of the snowfall," Macomb County Department of Roads communicated on its Facebook page, as reported by The Detroit News.
Amidst the battle against the icy elements, some areas have declared snow emergencies, enforcing temporary parking bans on city streets to facilitate cleanup efforts. "A snow emergency in effect from noon Wednesday through noon Thursday," officials of Auburn Hills announced, warning residents of ticketing or towing at their expense in case of violations, as per a statement obtained by The Detroit News. On Wednesday morning, North of I-69 especially, the National Weather Service cautioned about snowfall totals reaching 3 to 6 inches.
With another round of snow forecasted to hit southeast Michigan, conditions are expected to remain treacherous. As FOX 2 Detroit reports, the latest advisory from the National Weather Service indicates a band of snow moving into eastern Michigan by Tuesday night. Moreover, by Wednesday morning, most areas are bracing for snow to give way to rain, complicating both the forecast and the commute for residents. Adding to the inclement weather, gusty winds are forecasted, and temperatures are expected to plummet below freezing following Wednesday, sustaining the cold spell for the foreseeable future.
