A 17-year-old Philadelphia resident has surrendered to local police in connection with the hit-and-run killing of DJ June Rodriguez, a beloved figure in the local music scene. The tragic incident occurred on December 20 around 3:45 a.m. as Rodriguez was bicycling near the intersection of North 56th Street and Lancaster Avenue, and the teen, accompanied by his mother and lawyer, faces charges as a juvenile, including homicide by vehicle and operating a vehicle without a license, as reported by 6abc.
On the fateful morning, Rodriguez, 54, was struck by an SUV while making his way home from work at Bob and Barbara's Lounge, where he had been a stalwart presence on the turntables for decades. Since the incident, there have been calls for greater safety measures on the dangerous stretch of Lancaster Avenue, a known hotspot for speeding that endangers bicyclists and pedestrians, according to CBS News Philadelphia.
After analyzing surveillance footage, which led to the identification of the vehicle involved, the teen's surrender followed, details were shared by NBC10, alongside the charges that have been pressed against him, which include accident involving death, reckless driving, and other related offenses, shedding light on a series of events that led to the senseless loss of a community's beloved DJ.
General Manager Katrina Duva, of Bob and Barbara's Lounge, recalled Rodriguez's impact on the community, stating, "He knows people from all walks of life and would come here to see him. They knew when he was working," this sentiment echoed by patrons and coworkers alike and tells a story of a man whose life reverberated far beyond the walls where he spun records, illustrating a harmony disrupted too soon, according to an earlier interview with 6abc.
