
On January 8, Honolulu Police Department officers responded to an incident in Kakaʻako where a suspect reportedly caused an explosion. According to the official statement from the department, an unidentified male threw an explosive device into a covered driveway at 916 Queen Street. The incident resulted in damage to the building's exterior, impacting structures like lighting and wiring, yet there were no injuries reported. The suspect managed to flee the scene on foot and remained at large until recently.
Yesterday evening, approaching seven o'clock, a breakthrough was made in the case. A 38-year-old male suspect was arrested by HPD District 8 CRU officers in ʻEwa Beach in connection to the Kakaʻako explosion. During the successful operation, the police recovered a firearm and items they suspected to be high-grade fireworks. Announced on the same date, the Honolulu Police Department shared in a social media post, "Criminal Property Damage Investigation Kakaʻako Arrest Made," detailing this significant progress in their ongoing investigation into the events of January 8.
Following the ʻEwa Beach arrest, the suspect, whose name has not been disclosed, is facing charges for Criminal Property Damage (CPD) 1st Degree, Place to Keep Pistol, and Felon in Possession of a Firearm. With no reported injuries during the apprehension, the latest update reflects a sharp response from law enforcement to a startling act of public disruption. The investigation, as per the police department's statements, is still underway.
