An Ann Arbor fire truck became an unintentional part of a multi-vehicle crash scene it was responding to on Sunday, Jan. 11. The truck, Engine 1-3, from the Ann Arbor Fire Department, was positioned with its emergency lights on for the safety of the crew as they worked a crash on Jackson Road at the westbound I-94 exit ramp, reported by MLive. According to the Ann Arbor Fire Department, slick road conditions due to snow and ice caused another vehicle exiting the freeway to lose control, and cross Jackson Road, leading to a series of secondary collisions, one pushing a vehicle into the parked fire truck.
The subsequent crashes only resulted in minor injuries to the vehicle occupants, and no firefighters were harmed during the incident. The fire truck sustained minor damage at the front, as per a statement obtained by CBS News Detroit. The department has used this incident as a somber reminder of the 20th anniversary of Firefighter Amy Schnearle-Pennywitt's death, who died in the line of duty under similar treacherous roadway conditions, the department stated in a Facebook post.
In the aftermath of the crash, the Ann Arbor Fire Department emphasized road safety. They urged motorists to "slow down, increase following distance, and move over when approaching emergency vehicles operating on or near the roadway", as was echoed in the social media post from the City of Ann Arbor Fire Department - Government. Their call serves as an effort to prevent such incidents and to honor the sacrifice of their colleague lost two decades ago.
The incident also underscores the unpredictable risks faced by first responders, particularly when operating in hazardous weather conditions. As icy roads continue to pose dangers throughout the winter months, officials stress the importance of exercising caution and following safety advisories to help protect everyone on the roadway.
