Commuters in Arlington, brace yourselves for another round of navigational challenges as construction work plows ahead on the Southeast Connector Project. According to the City of Arlington, the westbound lanes of I-20 at the I-820 interchange will close for overnight construction starting from 11 p.m. next Tuesday, to quickly reopen by 6 a.m. the following morning, weather permitting. Drivers are asked to plan accordingly and to use alternate routes, with local detours firmly signposted to navigate the closures.
The ongoing $2.1 billion Southeast Connector Project aims to not only widen but also to better integrate approximately 16 miles of I-20, I-820, and US 287. This effort is designed to reduce traffic congestion, enhance safety, and improve overall transportation efficiency across Tarrant County’s eastern and southeastern areas. Completion of the project is anticipated by 2027, with areas throughout the Metroplex set to benefit from the upgrades. Motorists should remain aware that speed limits have been reduced to 55 mph within the entire corridor.
Further disruptions include the extended closure of the northbound I-820 exit ramp to Lancaster Avenue/Craig Street, which is not expected to reopen until next Thursday. Detours will guide drivers to alternative paths with Craig Street, Anglin Drive, and Sun Valley Drive all having closures affecting traffic flow over I-820 and I-20. The detour routes will direct travelers to Meadowbrook Drive, Hartman Road, and business route alternatives until the regular passages become available once more.
To stay informed about project updates, construction progress, and detours, the City of Arlington encourages commuters to visit the Southeast Connector Project website. Real-time traffic information can also be accessed by downloading the Waze app, which has been recommended by the city as a tool to help residents effectively circumvent construction-related road closures.
