The Arlington County Police Department is now inviting community members to engage with its 30th Community Police Academy (CPA), as they open applications for an initiative aimed at bridging the gap between the police and the public. Deputy Chief Dave Giroux highlighted the importance of this program, saying, "The Community Police Academy continues to provide a unique educational and experiential opportunity for participants to learn about and discuss various aspects of policing in their community," as reported by Arlingtonva.us. The CPA's curriculum is designed to provide a comprehensive view of law enforcement operations and the various challenges faced by officers daily.
The 10-week program, starting on February 26, includes sessions every Thursday with a special off-site Experience Day on a Saturday. Participants will delve into topics like recruitment, the legal framework of policing, use of force, and community outreach, amongst other areas. During the Experience Day, attendees will test their newfound knowledge through simulated scenarios, a unique touch to this 30-year-strong community tradition. Residents and individuals associated with the Arlington community who are 18 years and older are welcome to apply. However, all applicants will undergo a criminal history check, and prior records are not an automatic disqualifier, instead reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
Classes will be hosted at the Arlington County Courthouse, with the Experience Day set in Ashburn, Va., at the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Academy. In these sessions, sworn and civilian staff from across the agency will present, allowing for hands-on experiences and interactions that present an unvarnished look at the day-to-day realities of policing. Each class comprises lectures, panels, and Q&A sessions, combining practice with theory to provide a multi-faceted understanding of the police force's role in society.
The CPA aims to represent Arlington's diverse population through balanced enrollment. Interested applicants are not confined to just residents; those working or studying in Arlington or connected to local organizations can be part of this landmark program. Applications are due by January 25, 2026, and can be submitted online. Class size is limited, ensuring a more personal learning experience and effective dialogue between the participants and facilitators.
