ThunderCloud Subs just turned a Thanksgiving workout into serious cash for a local nonprofit, handing over a record $615,000 check to Caritas of Austin after its annual Turkey Trot. The contribution will help fund a new Caritas housing development expected to open later this year, making this the largest single-year haul in the event's history. What started as a holiday run has cemented itself as a decades-long Austin tradition and one of the city's marquee community fundraisers.

The sandwich chain presented the $615,000 donation in a ceremony on Thursday and told reporters the Trot has now raised more than $6 million for Caritas across 35 years. Organizers said the latest round of funding will go toward housing and services for people experiencing homelessness, according to KEYE.

How the Trot Stacks Up

ThunderCloud’s post-event summary reports that this year's race drew 25,760 participants, the biggest turnout in the Trot's history. It also notes that 100% of race proceeds and raffle revenue are directed to Caritas. Organizers credited registration fees, sponsorships and raffle-ticket sales for pushing the fundraising total to its new high, according to ThunderCloud Subs.

Where the Money Will Go

Caritas of Austin works to prevent and end homelessness by connecting people to housing, jobs and basic supports like meals and pantry services, per Caritas of Austin. The nonprofit is also partnered on projects such as Cairn Point Cameron, a 150-unit supportive-housing development the City of Austin says will provide permanent supportive units and onsite services for seniors and others exiting homelessness.

“This development is a critical step in addressing the affordable housing crisis facing our city,” Caritas President and CEO Jo Kathryn Quinn said in the City of Austin press release. The release notes that Caritas will offer onsite case management and supportive services at the complex to help residents stabilize and work toward independence.

Why It Matters

The Turkey Trot has become a rare example of sustained, city-scale philanthropy. Organizers and local reporting note that the race draws thousands on Thanksgiving morning and has routed multi-million-dollar support to Caritas since 1991, according to Community Impact. That dependable stream of event-driven funding arrives as supportive housing and case-management services remain stretched thin across Austin, making the latest $615,000 gift a timely boost for projects coming online this year.
