The National Weather Service office for Baltimore, Maryland, and Washington, D.C., has issued a Cold Weather Advisory effective until 11 a.m. today, with wind chills expected to reach as low as minus 9 degrees. A second advisory is in effect from 8 p.m. this evening through 11 a.m. Saturday, forecasting wind chills as low as minus 8 degrees. The advisory applies to the District of Columbia, parts of Maryland including Northern Baltimore, Cecil, and Southern Baltimore counties, and areas of northern Virginia.

Residents in the affected areas are advised to take protective measures against the cold, as prolonged exposure without adequate clothing may increase the risk of hypothermia and frostbite. The NWS noted that the current conditions are part of a broader pattern of Arctic air affecting the region, with additional Cold Weather Advisories possible through the end of the week.

In addition to the cold temperatures, gusty winds and the possibility of snow are expected. Other weather alerts include a Gale Watch in effect for all tidal waters from Saturday evening through Sunday, along with a Heavy Freezing Spray Watch for waters south of Drum Point from Saturday night into Sunday morning. Freezing Spray Advisories may also be issued for additional areas.

The NWS noted that wind chills reaching as low as minus 10 degrees may increase the risk of hypothermia if precautions are not taken. The agency recommends wearing hats, gloves, and appropriate winter clothing when outdoors, keeping pets indoors when possible, and checking on individuals who may be more vulnerable to the cold.

Local officials also emphasize indoor safety measures, advising residents to ensure that outdoor animals have adequate shelter and that portable heaters are operated properly. They caution against using generators or grills indoors due to safety risks. Additional details and real-time updates are available on the National Weather Service website.
