The streets of Detroit felt the brisk caress of winter on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, with a forecast calling for snow showers mainly before late morning. As families huddled in celebration of a man who had a dream, the skies seemed to share their own vision of a white, wintry blanket, diminishing to less than one inch of snow as the day proceeded. The National Weather Service reported a sharp drop in temperature, estimating it to fall around 16 degrees by the afternoon. They also issued a warning for strong winds, reaching up to 20 mph and gusting as high as 40 mph, which increases the likelihood of snow to around 80% during daylight hours.
The chill of the evening reminds Detroiters that winter is far from over, with tonight's temperature dropping to a low near 7 degrees. The wind chill is not to be taken lightly, plunging to as low as -8, while winds from the west blow steadily between 10 and 14 mph, and gusts could reach 28 mph. According to the forecast, there's a slight 20% chance of snowfall as the city transitions into the night.
Looking ahead to Tuesday, Detroit will experience mostly cloudy skies with a high near 16 degrees, but the wind chill may feel as biting as -8. The wind is expected to continue its relentless pace from the west southwest, at 10 to 14 mph, and gusts whipping up to 24 mph. Tuesday night might see the return of snow after 1 am, with a 40% chance of precipitation. Temperatures are expected to hover around 8 degrees, with wind chills making it feel as if it’s zero. The south wind will blow at a calmer 6 to 9 mph.
Snow is likely again on Wednesday, mainly before the early afternoon, complicating commutes and outdoor activities for residents. The daytime high will rise to near 33 degrees, with a southwest wind persisting at 10 to 15 mph, and gusts potentially hitting 25 mph. The probability of snow stands at 70%, with possible new snow accumulation of around an inch. The rest of the week promises fluctuating cold, as the weather service predicts mostly cloudy to partly sunny skies with temperatures plunging significantly by the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.
Detroiters can anticipate the latter half of the week to carry on less eventfully, weather-wise, with Thursday's high inching up to 23 degrees beneath mostly cloudy skies. However, nightfall brings a steep drop to around 5 degrees. Heading into the weekend, it appears that a partly sunny Friday will precede a mostly sunny Saturday; however, temperatures are expected to plummet with weekend highs teetering at 8 and 12 degrees, respectively, and the nighttime lows sinking into the negatives. Sunday promises more sun with similar frosty conditions.
