A man was killed last night after being struck by a black SUV in a crosswalk on Broadway Street in Houston’s South Loop area, Houston police report. The vehicle fled the scene. Officers closed Broadway in both directions while investigators examined the crash site.
What officials say
The officers responded to the 2900 block of Broadway Street, where Lt. Larry Crowson said the victim was walking in a marked crosswalk when a southbound black SUV failed to yield and struck him. Crowson said the SUV continued south on Broadway while detectives from the Eastside Division and the Vehicular Crimes Division began investigating.
Scene and disruption
FOX 26 Houston also reported the deadly crash near Brockton Street, close to the South Loop, and noted that Broadway was shut down in both directions as officers documented the scene. Both outlets said police were working to pull surveillance video from nearby businesses and churches to help pinpoint the SUV and the person behind the wheel.
Police ask for tips
Investigators are canvassing the area for witnesses and video. Anyone who saw the crash or has footage showing the SUV before or after the collision is urged to contact the Houston Police Department.
According to the Houston Police Department and cited by the City of Houston, tips can be submitted to the HPD Hit-and-Run Unit at 713-247-4072 or to Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
Potential criminal penalties
Under Texas law, leaving the scene of a fatal crash is a second-degree felony. The Texas Transportation Code states that failing to stop after a collision that results in death can carry a prison sentence of two to 20 years.
Broadway's recent crash history
This section of Broadway has experienced several fatal crashes in recent months. A November collision at high speed previously left two people dead, with suspects fleeing the scene. City press releases indicate that HPD has conducted multiple investigations into serious collisions along this corridor.
Police have not released the victim’s name pending notification of relatives, and no arrests had been reported as of late Friday. Officials said additional information will be shared as leads are developed and evidence from the scene is processed.
