In a significant drug interception earlier this month, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at Gateway International Bridge in Brownsville seized over half a million dollars' worth of cocaine. A Mexican citizen driving a 2008 Chevrolet was caught with 41.27 pounds of the substance, valued at approximately $551,000. The bust underscores the ongoing battle against narcotics smuggling at the nation's borders.
The seizure occurred on Jan. 8, when a 29-year-old female Mexican citizen applied for entry into the United States. During a routine check, the officers referred the Chevrolet to a secondary inspection, where their canine unit and a nonintrusive inspection system alerted them to the presence of hidden contraband. In an article obtained by CBP, Port Director Tater Ortiz praised the diligent efforts of the frontline officers.
According to the CBP press release, "as this seizure clearly illustrates, our frontline CBP officers work with diligence as they perform their duties and their efforts led to this significant narcotics interception," Ortiz said. "Enforcement actions like these help keep our communities safe." The vehicle's hidden compartments yielded the narcotics, which were promptly seized alongside the vehicle itself.
Following the discovery, the driver was handed over to Homeland Security Investigations special agents, who have initiated a criminal investigation.
