In a developing scandal that has rocked Celina ISD, 17 families have banded together, launching a lawsuit against both the district and former coach Caleb Elliott following deeply troubling revelations. According to WFAA, these families have leveled allegations that additional evidence has been unearthed showing that Elliott was not only involved in taking illicit footage of minors but possibly distributed these images as well.
With the tendrils of injustice seeming to reach deep into the fabric of the school's management, the lawsuit accuses some within Celina ISD of prior knowledge of Elliott's actions. Mitch Little, the attorney representing the affected families, claimed at a press conference, "For families who are trying to seek justice, it is going to be difficult for us to know fully who has their hands on the photos and videos taken of these children," a statement per WFAA. Moreover, subpoenas have been issued to Snapchat in the hopes of tracing the transmission of the illegal content.
Elliott faces federal charges for sexual exploitation of children and multiple related charges after being accused of photographing and videotaping boys in a middle school locker room. Fox 4's report added further weight to concerns with the revelation that Elliott's employment and unchecked behavior might have been influenced by his father, Bill Elliott's, position of power within the athletic department, an issue underscored in a third-party report.
As reported by FOX 4 News, the 84-page report concluded that while there was no proof employees knew or disregarded past misconduct by Caleb Elliott, there were systemic issues at play. Before his sudden retirement, Bill Elliott wielded considerable influence, with text exchanges suggesting he had a hand in his son's hiring process. The investigation also revealed issues with the routine review and evaluation of teachers and the unorthodox granting of contracts.
The Celina Police Department, through Chief John Cullison, has called upon those claiming to have further evidence and witnesses to step forward so that justice may be properly sought. In a statement issued on the department's Facebook page, Cullison implored claimants to fulfill their responsibility of presenting new information to law enforcement. Meanwhile, Celina ISD has pledged a commitment to transparency and a thorough investigation process in collaboration with an independent third-party investigator, law enforcement, and the Texas Education Agency.
