The fight against hunger is taking a forward step in Central Texas as the Central Texas Food Bank, in partnership with the Austin Independent School District, has recently inaugurated six new school-based food pantries. These pantries have been set up at Barbara Jordan, Katherine A. Cook, Ortega, Padrón, Pérez, and Walnut Creek Elementary Schools. In a press release from the food bank, they discussed that these food pantries aim to aid families by offering accessible, free, nutritious food options right on school grounds.

Marking the progress of their Feeding Futures School Pantry Program, which is a clear nod to the commitment to community welfare, Anurita Mittra, Vice President of Network Programs and Services with the Central Texas Food Bank, praised the initiative. "This is a wonderful way for us to provide easy access to food - nutritious, healthy food - that’s culturally relevant to families," Mittra told CBS Austin. The initiative recognizes that schools are trusted spaces, and placing pantries there helps minimize the transportation hassles and reduce the often-encountered stigma tied to seeking help for sustenance.

During the ceremonial ribbon-cutting event, AISD Superintendent Matias Segura expressed gratitude for the support coming from the Central Texas Food Bank. "We are grateful for the continued partnership with the Central Texas Food Bank and their commitment to meeting families where they are," Segura stated in a press release, highlighting the efforts made in ensuring food security among families in the district. Notably, this expansion brings more than just convenience; it brings a beacon of hope for more than 61,000 children in Travis County facing food insecurity, as reported by KXAN.
