Two people were arrested Friday in a Stanislaus County investigation into an early December shooting at Riverview Park in Ceres that left a 20-year-old man dead and another man seriously wounded. The arrests follow weeks of follow-up work into the Dec. 3 gunfire, when investigators say several shots rang out during an overnight confrontation at the neighborhood park. Neighbors said word of the arrests brought a mix of relief and renewed concern about safety along the riverfront.
According to CBS Sacramento, Ceres police identified Oshua Cervantes and Josue Lopez as suspects. Cervantes was arrested on suspicion of murder, and Lopez was taken into custody on an attempted murder allegation. The outlet reported that officers executed four search warrants at multiple homes in Stanislaus County as part of the probe.
How police say the attack unfolded
Police say a group had gathered at Riverview Park around 2 a.m. on Dec. 3 when a vehicle with multiple males inside approached and several rounds were fired, hitting two men and killing one of them. Detectives said there were early indications the shooting may have been gang-related. The surviving 26-year-old was transported to a hospital with multiple gunshot wounds, according to KCRA.
Victim identified; community responds
Authorities have identified the person who died as 20-year-old Zocario Benjamin Munoz, the Ceres Police Department announced and local outlets reported. Coverage by neighborhood grief and online memorials in the days after the shooting highlighted how the killing resonated in the community. Officials say they continue to seek witnesses.
What the arrests mean legally
Cervantes was booked on suspicion of Munoz's murder and Lopez on suspicion of attempted murder. Arrests are not convictions, and prosecutors will decide on formal charges, arraignments and any bail. Reporting by CBS Sacramento confirmed both the arrests and the service of search warrants, and the investigation remains active.
How to help
Detectives ask anyone with information, photos or video from the Riverview Park area around 2 a.m. on Dec. 3 to call Detective Welsh at (209) 538-5616, per the Ceres Courier. Police say tips and footage can be critical as the case moves toward possible charging and prosecution.
