Charlotte and the surrounding areas are currently in the grasp of a treacherous cold snap as the National Weather Service has issued both a Cold Weather Advisory and a Winter Weather Advisory. These advisories warn residents of very cold wind chills, expected to reach as low as 4 degrees above zero, and icy conditions on the roads, respectively. As the cold front maintains its hold, wind chills as low as 5 above zero could "result in hypothermia if precautions are not taken," the National Weather Service cautions.
Issued early Monday, the advisories cover northeast Georgia through the Piedmont and Upstate South Carolina. Cold temperatures are expected to continue, with similarly low wind chills possible Wednesday and Thursday nights. Motorists are advised to travel cautiously, wear warm clothing, and watch for black ice in the mornings.
The region is still dealing with slick roads from the weekend storm. The National Weather Service warns that bridges and overpasses may remain hazardous this morning. Extreme cold has also raised concerns about power outages, prompting advisories to stress safe use of portable heaters and to avoid running generators or grills indoors.
Residents are encouraged to check on vulnerable community members, such as the elderly or those without adequate heating. With cold temperatures continuing, support and preparedness remain important. For sheltering information, call 211.
