Early this morning, the quiet of Claremont Road was shattered by the wail of sirens as Charlotte Fire Department units rushed to a house fire reported at 4:29 a.m. Charlotte Fire Department's social media post indicated that their crews, arriving swiftly in four minutes, were met with heavy smoke and flames escaping the confines of a home on the 900 block.

With temperatures near 21 degrees, firefighters battled the blaze while Rescue 10 conducted a search inside the home. Captain Jerry Rodgers found a small dog and passed it to Firefighter Brewer, who carried it to safety.

The dog and its bed, rescued by Firefighter Blackmon, were returned to their owners. The Charlotte Fire Department contained the blaze by 4:44 a.m.

Five adults were displaced after a fire caused significant damage to a home. The American Red Cross is providing assistance, and the Charlotte Fire Department’s Investigating Task Force determined the fire was accidental, originating in a bathroom at the rear of the house. Property and contents are estimated at $150,000.
