Daniel Joseph Broadway, 54, of Charlotte, has been sentenced to 6½ years for possession of child sexual abuse material (CSAM), including some AI-generated content, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of North Carolina announced on January 27.
U.S. District Judge Matthew E. Orso ordered Broadway to serve a lifetime of supervised release after his prison term and to register as a sex offender. He must also pay $17,000 in special assessments and $15,000 in restitution to the victims depicted in the images.
According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, a cybertip alerted authorities to Broadway’s activities, prompting an FBI and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department investigation. In December 2023, a search of his residence yielded more than 30,000 AI-generated images and videos, along with over 8,600 traditional CSAM images and videos. U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson said, “Using AI to generate harmful imagery of children is illegal and we will aggressively prosecute those who do so.”
On April 23, 2025, Broadway pleaded guilty to charges of possession and intent to view child pornography involving minors under 12. The case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat child sexual exploitation.
